American Students By
John T. Stock
($24.95) In
the latter part of the 19th century and the early 1900s, some four hundred American
students went to Germany for advanced studies of chemistry. When the celebrated
physical chemist Wilhelm Ostwald moved to the University of Leipzig in 1887, a
succession of American students joined him. This book emphasizes the research
and experimental techniques used by them.
Closely
associated with Ostwald were Arrhenius, van't Hoff and Nernst. Together, these
four revolutionized chemistry in general and physical chemistry in particular.
They all received Nobel Prizes. Along with their Leipzig Ph.D.s, the students
returned to America with ideas and skills that greatly helped the nation to become
a leader in science and technology. Some modernized the teaching of chemistry;
others made technological advances such as the establishment of America's first
industrial research laboratory. John Thomas Stock is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry
at the University of Connecticut. He received the American Chemical Society Dexter
Award for outstanding contributions to the history of chemistry. His major interests
are in the design, construction and use of chemical apparatus and in experimental
techniques. OSTWALD'S
