J. Duffy must have listened, from a very early age, to readings from Homer, the
Psalms of David, the Song of Songs, Spenser, Milton, Shakespeare, and various
lyricists of the rosebud gatherers. He is imprinted with our great language's
flights and furies and it pours forth from him like a force of nature. Mr. Duffy
is also a thinking man, and in substance reminds me the most of John Donne. Like
Donne, he asks his own questions, not used ones, and makes up and tries out his
own answers, too. The result is a fresh adventure in contemporary poetry. If there
were a tavern where such poems were said aloud every night, I'd be there, every
night, in a corner, smiling! --Jean Pedrick.
Reconcile Consider this chain of difference from
what is felt to what is said from what is said to what is heard from
what is heard to what is believed. Gladly then apologize for every word
for everything I said for everything I said can be as easily redeemed but
not for everything I felt for everything I felt stands at my head a
stone as large as any pharaoh ever dreamed --from Ordinary Lies CD
read by the author.
